First Announcement TISOLS2020
From 20 – 24 April 2020, the Tenth International Symposium on Land Subsidence (TISOLS) will take place in the Netherlands.
Land subsidence, or land-level lowering, is a major problem that threatens the viability and sustainable economic development for millions of people throughout the world, especially in (but not restricted to) highly urbanized coastal areas. It is often a result of overexploitation of groundwater resources. The total costs globally amount up to many billions of dollars annually.
New innovative technologies and approaches are needed
New innovative technologies and approaches are needed to reduce or, in the best case, to stop land subsidence. TISOLS intends to bring together 300+ international experts to share the latest research and insights on natural and anthropogenic land-level lowering.
When: 20-24 April 2020
Where: Delft-Gouda, The Netherlands
TISOLS will be hosted in the Netherlands, a country with a 1000-year history of human-induced land subsidence. Subsidence has made the land to what it is today; a water-rich country which is one third below sea level and coping. But the Netherlands is still subsiding, causing damage to infrastructure and buildings. On top of that, land subsidence is worrisome for an already low lying country that has to cope with sea-level rise.
At TISOLS in the Netherlands, we provide a platform to share our understanding of land subsidence, reliable data, and innovative techniques. Ultimately, we aim to increase the acknowledgement of the land subsidence problem in order to devise targeted strategies and solutions for long-term sustainable living conditions in subsiding areas.
This means that at TISOLS we take on the challenge that lies in linking hydrological, geotechnical and geological knowledge to policy and socially acceptable solutions.
Spring is an excellent time of the year to visit the Netherlands. One only has to mention the famous flower show at the Keukenhof. During and after the symposium half-day and full-day excursions will visit some iconic examples of land subsidence and lowlands technology.
TISOLS is organised under the auspices of the Unesco IHP Land Subsidence International Initiative. This working group has endeavored to improve and disseminate knowledge on land subsidence since the 1970s, through International Symposia on Land Subsidence, collaborative projects and publications.
